Hurricane Damaged Mostly Miami-Dade Homes
Out of the 19 houses destroyed in Florida by Hurricane Katrina, 14 were in Broward and five in Miami-Dade. Out of the 205 houses damaged in the Miami-Broward-Monroe area, most were Miami-Dade homes. Flooding was responsible for most of the damages.
The relatively small amount of damage done to Miami-Dade homes "cast doubt as to whether homeowners would get help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency." Casting even more doubt is the fact that most of the agency´s resources have been shifted to the Gulf Coast.
FEMA has not yet decided how it will help those who lost their Miami-Dade homes, but on August 28,Miami-Dade and Broward qualified "to receive federal reimbursement for expenses incurred by local governments within 72 hours of the storm." The state has requested that the same aid also be granted to Monroe County.
