New Miami Condos Faired Poorer during Storm than Older Buildings
Hurricane Katrina put Miami condos to the test last month, "and while no widespread weaknesses have surfaced, some buildings revealed unexpected shortcomings."
Some of the more common problems encountered in various Miami condo complexes were windows being pushed out by strong winds, water seeping in through windows and balcony doors, flooding and malfunctioning elevators due to water seepage.
"The continental Group, the largest condo management company in South Florida," reported lost windows and "significant water damage" in seven of its complexes, including some of the Miami condos.
Overall, Miami condos that faired best were those in older buildings. South Florida may "have one of the stiffest building codes in the country," but it would seem that with all of the current construction, many new Miami condos aren´t being built to withstand the test of South Florida´s temperamental weather.
