Miami Condos May Not Come with Parking
Anyone considering purchasing one or more Miami condos has to consider where they or their tenants are going to park. Miami condos converted from older buildings may provide one space per unit or no spaces at all “since they were built at a time when couples had only one car, and many residents were snowbirds who lived here only part time.”
The boom in Miami condos is making already crowded neighborhoods even more crowded. Yet the influx of people may not be accompanied by an increase in parking spaces. “Even condo units that come with two spaces may not have adequate guest parking for visitors -- or a third driver in the family.”
Since parking spaces are not a productive use of land, “developers and city planners are trying to come up with creative ways to provide more parking” for Miami condos. One such idea is the installation of “special mechanical lifts that will allow buyers to suspend a second car over their space.”
Some hope that the lack of available parking will “encourage owners to have fewer cars,” as many new Miami condos will be built above offices and stores, allowing residents “to walk to shopping and maybe even work.”
